Gym Empire – Progress Update 37

Game Development So Far

It’s done! It’s FINALLY DONE!! The Save/Load system has finally been completed!! It’s only taken me like what… three months? I don’t know whether to laugh or cry! I knew the Save/Load system was going to be tricky for me to implement. The more I understood the more the task grew right before my eyes. It was like standing at the bottom of a mountain and it looking bigger the higher you looked.

Game Development

It’s not that the implementation of a Save/Load system is a particularly difficult task. It can be quite time consuming depending on the game type. The issue for me was that it was a part of development I’ve not had to deal with before on this scale. Therefore every next step of development I had to take was another step I had to research. Getting the concept clear in my head was harder than actually executing it.

But it’s done now and I can move onwards and upwards with the rest of development!

Other Developments

In the two plus years I’ve been developing games. Never before has a task challenged me so much as the development of the Save/Load system. To the point of losing a large part of my drive.

In the past I’ve talked about the key to completing and releasing a game. The main factor is keeping your drive and commitment high. It’s easy to keep that drive going when things are flowing smoothly and everything is going well. I guess I’ve been kind of lucky with my game development as I had not yet reached a point where my drive was heavily challenged. Until the last couple of months.

A much busier day job. New addition to the family. A trying game development challenge. And an extra task on to do list with YouTube video creation really put my drive and commitment to the test! I found it really hard to motivate myself to pick up the laptop and keep on crunching out lines of code…

But I did… And it’s thanks to you guys!

Game Development - Discord

Genuinely! The one thing that kept me cracking on at a regular pace where the comments and questions in Discord. The new members that would slowly trickle in. The kind comments on Twitter and more recently YouTube. I kept thinking about you guys and how committed I am to making this game with you guys! I would never give up on making Gym Empire. It’s too close to my heart, but keeping up a regular pace of development is all thanks to you guys. So thank you for that!

Development VLOGs

As I mentioned in the Gym Empire General Update just last week I had been thinking about starting a development VLOG on the YouTube Channel. I’m pleased to say that I uploaded the first Gym Empire Development VLOG. There’s a lot of improvements I want to make to the future blogs, like keeping things snappier and making the VLOGs more interesting. However I’m really excited to have gotten the ball rolling. I hope you enjoy the new format of updates.

The VLOGs will take more of a fortnightly/monthly role in the updates. The website blog will continue the weekly updates and the Discord will be the place for more daily updates.

Time Management

With the development of the Save/Load system complete I am pleased to say that I am now moving on the developing the basic game loop. Time to start turning Gym Empire into an actual game!

Gym Empire is now available to add to your Steam Wishlist.
