Hey everyone! How’s it going?
This weekend I finally posted the first prototype gif of Glow. Its shows the basic hook of the game. The game is an abstract, twitchy platformer with the lights turned off. The environment is mostly pitch black with the only light sources being from Glowie (the main character), the escape hatch and Glowies bullets.

Over the next few weeks I’ll be revealing more about the game and the different mechanics as I implement them. I’m currently working on trying to add a visually appealing colour to the glow. I can get different colours to work however they dull down the environment quite a bit and don’t really provide that glowing luminosity I’m after.
The issue is I’m using surfaces to in GameMaker to create the glow effect, but surfaces don’t really provide a tint option to colour the underlying sprites, instead a surface essentially paints over the screen. So to get this kind of effect I have to use transparency, but this just kind of masks the sprites rather than making them “glow” a different colour.
Other than that I’ve been working on the animation and starting to move into the “make it look good” phase as the core mechanics are pretty much down.
In parallel I’m continuing to formulate my marketing strategy and I am on my way to a pretty decent press list. Part of my strategy is to research sites and YouTubers that have covered games similar to Glow. If you’re interested I will cover this more in a separate post.
So I’m off to research more about blend modes in GameMaker and to see if I can figure out this colour glow as I think it will add a really nice aesthetic to the game!
See you soon.
Thanks!
Stav
