Sometimes it’s the little things that can make all the difference. If you’ve been keeping up with my blog you’ll know that it’s been a difficult week. On top of that I’ve been struggling to regain my momentum in game dev during the start of 2018.
I’d found myself against a bit of a brick wall with the Gym Empire development as I’d stumbled into a error I couldn’t solve whilst trying to implement a happiness icon for the clients. I knew it wasn’t a big error to overcome but my mind just wasn’t in the right place. None of the code was making sense to me even though it’s relatively simple.
On top of that the difficulties of the previous week really had put game dev right to the bottom of my priority list. After having a week to heal I finally started to get back to a normal routine and started again at work yesterday. Today I decided to get the laptop out again for lunch and go to my lunchtime game dev office (the car).
This time when I booted up Unity and looked at the error everything kind of made sense! I could see exactly where I was going wrong and fixed it in a matter of minutes. The fix is only a minor update to the game as a whole, in the fact that an icon now displays alongside the clients to indicate happiness, but to me right now it’s major. It feels as if my mind is clear again, clear of the jumbled mess it had gotten into as I started to find some difficulty in making Gym Empire and free of the worry of not being able to get past those difficulties. It was as if my own personal happiness icon just turned into a smiley face!
Today was one of the those moments in life where something very small makes a big difference. I got that feeling, that realisation that when things feel pretty lame and you can’t really think of a way out, you just need to keep taking one step at a time and keep looking forward because you’ll find that way out and it will feel so simple when you do.
