Some Days You Just Don’t Get To Game Dev

I’ve gotten to the point now where I like squeeze in even a little bit of game dev every day. If I don’t I feel it’s a bit of a wasted opportunity to make progress and to express myself artistically. But I made a conscious not to today.

Today was always going to be a busy day. It’s the last day of the 11 week exercise program I’m following and I needed to get to work early so I could leave early for a 4 hour course I had to  attend from 5:30pm.

I also haven’t spent as much time with my friends at work during lunch as I spend most of it doing game dev in my car. So in thought I make the decision to leave my laptop at home today and spend some time with friends.

The day started bust but then got very hectic as when I was about to take my son to day care, he started feeling unwell and threw up everywhere. It was panic stations for a while as I had to get to work early, but my wife had left for work and I couldn’t take my son to day care after having been sick! Luckily I got in touch with my wife and she was able to work from home so came to our rescue.

The rest of the day went as planned and I had a great lunch in the lovely weather with my mates.

I didn’t technically do any game dev but I did a few things to support it like sorting out bank details and filling out the lengthy steam direct application form. That felt like a really nice milestone and a productive use of my time.

I then attended my course and got back home about 10:30pm. I’ve had a lovely catch up with my wife and my son is feeling a lot better. So I can say it’s been a really good day.

I have missed not doing game dev today but it’s actually been quite refreshing and I’m excited to get back into it over the weekend.

Some days you just don’t get to game dev, but I guess that’s OK…

    1. It’s funny how having a kid ends up putting things into perspective. I think it’s actually helped me motivate and organise myself. Plus if nothing else they teach you how to put up with no sleep! lol
