Hey everybody, how’s it going?
As I’ve been doing a lot of research over the past few months in the world of indie dev I’ve come across a wealth of informative and interesting articles, videos and podcasts. A lot of them have helped me gain confidence and earn an appreciation for the depth and passion involved in the community. So I thought it would be a good idea to start a weekly run down of the best of the web I’ve come across so far. So without further ado, here is the first week of The Vault:
Uncovering the Success of Steam Games – This is a blog post by Michal Trneny and it is a summary of academic research performed about whether the success of Steam Games can be evaluated before their release. It’s a very interesting post because it puts some statistics behind the drastic increase of games being released to Steam in the past 4 years. The most interesting part though is that it comes across as reassuring in the fact that the numbers of games considered successful hasn’t changed much in those 4 years. From that one can assume that if your game was going to be successful 4 years ago it probably has a high likelihood of being successful if release today.
How to Make Game Which Make Money – This is the first in a 3 part YouTube series by Rick Davidson which goes into the basics of giving your game the best chance at success. Although named after making money is a lot deeper than that and actually focusing around ensuring you make a good game. I like this one because it simple yet effective steps to consider especially for those just starting out.
The Last Game I Make Before I Die – What can I say? This was a GDC postmortem for the game Crashlands. For those that haven’t seen it or heard the story it is one of the most moving and equally informative 56mins I’ve ever seen. I’ll let the video speak for itself…
