The Vault – Week 3

TGIF and vault time!

My opportunity for research this week has been a lot less as any spare moment I’ve had on the Internet has been working on my press list. However I still have a some really useful takeaways from the week.

  • Five Key Areas of Discoverability for Indie Devs – this first entry was brought to my attention by my wife (Hayley). She has been really supporting me in my endeavour and it seems she’s been doing a little research of her own J. This was a great find and really relevant to where I’m at right now. It’s a Gamasutra blog post based on marketing and the strategies that can be used to lead people to buy your game. I especially liked this one as it covered some areas I hadn’t thought of before and added extra details to well know concepts. This will definitely be one I look back to over time.
  • Juice It or Lose It – this is an old one but a good one nonetheless. Back from GDC 2012 Martin Jonasson and Petri Purho talk about the impact that adding “juice” to your game can have. Basically all the nice little touches that make the game feel more alive and interactive. Some of the examples should be taken with a pinch of salt but overall they make a really good point especially for more rookie developers.
  • Chris Duffin Interview – a seemingly off topic one this but actually very relevant. This is an interview with Chris Duffin on Joe DeFranco’s Industrial Strength Podcast. A mainly exercise related podcast, the Industrial Strength actually has a lot of great interviews that go way beyond just keeping fit and healthy and this one is one of the best. Chris Duffin talks about his very unique and emotional upbringing and how nothing got in the way of his determination to achieve his goals. Making the most of challenges, not letting circumstance define you and having a clear direction on what you are aiming for are just a few of the takeaways that can be translated to anybody’s personal endeavours.

Take it easy and I hope you have a great weekend!
